Many ICAG candidates respond to a failed paper by studying longer. This article follows an illustrative candidate, Ama, built from common patterns and not a real individual, to show why that rarely works and what does. You will learn three changes and a five-step plan for this week.
Where Ama started
Ama is an audit trainee. Her evenings disappear in busy season, so weekends carry her study. She reads carefully, makes neat notes and watches lectures. What she rarely does is sit a full question under time. Computations feel risky, so she reads solutions instead. “I understand it when I see it,” she says. But seeing a solution and producing one are different skills, and the exam tests only one.
She fails. She studies longer. She fails again.
The turning point
Ama compares her script with her notes and asks where the marks went. She finds that she understood the concepts, yet her computations were slow, her layouts messy, and her time poorly spent. It was a production problem, not a knowledge problem.
The three changes
1. Attempt before you read. Begin each topic with a cold attempt. The struggle shows you precisely what to study.
2. Practise the full output under time. Layout, workings and conclusion, timed. These are skills that improve through repetition.
3. Keep an error log. One line per lost mark. After two weeks you will see three recurring mistakes. Fix those first.
Faith and preparation
If you pray before your papers, keep praying. Just make sure prayer is not covering for preparation you have not done. Pray for focus and calm, then do the work you are praying about. Prayer without preparation is hoping. Preparation without peace is anxiety. Together they are confidence.
The result
In this scenario, on her third sitting Ama has practised the exam so often that the paper feels familiar. She plans her time, attempts every question, keeps clean layouts, and finishes.
EXAM TIP: Clear layout and visible workings protect your marks even when a figure goes wrong, because a marker can follow your logic. Practise full answers under time.
Your 5-step plan this week
- Attempt one past question tonight, cold and timed.
- Mark it honestly. One line per lost mark.
- Read only what that question exposed.
- Protect one daily study block and tell someone.
- Pause thirty seconds before each session to pray, breathe or set your intention, then start the clock.
Conclusion
Your next result is shaped by the next fourteen days. Change the method, keep your faith, and do the work.
